Pablo Zareceansky, from the Quepo foundation of communication for social change, presented the Refugio por género (“refuge due to gender”) project at the Jaume I University of Castelló on April 5, 2017. The activity associated with the project FEM2016-65834-C2-2-P took place in the context of IUDESP’s Permanent Seminars and focused on the description of the creative process of the audiovisuals that the foundation created for the Spanish Commission for Refugees (CEAR) with the objective of raising awareness about the situation of people forced to emigrate for reasons related to feminicide, gender-based violence, female genital mutilation, forced marriages, honour crimes and LGTBI discrimination, among others.
Zareceansky highlighted the creative effort to talk about survivors and to go beyond the viral through the presentation of true testimonies. However, he pointed out that in order to protect the identity of the refugees, the participation of actors had to be resorted to. This point was important in the course of the subsequent debate, where the pros and cons of the fictionalisation of the testimonies in order to sensitise the audience, create critical awareness and promote action were discussed.
